ATENE - Il cielo color arancio plumbeo e migliaia di persone sono state costrette alla fuga: è il bilancio di 36 ore di fuoco, quello che divampa in due grandi foreste che lambiscono Atene, e che centinaia di vigili del fuoco non riescono a domare.
E almeno 70 persone potrebbero essere decedute: a scriverlo la Bbc online, che cita la Croce Rossa. Secondo la Croce Rossa 26 corpi sono stati trovati nel giardino di una villa nel villaggio di Mati. La Bbc precisa che prima di questa scoperta il bilancio era di 24 vittime.
Almeno 500 persone sono state ricoverate in ospedale, alcune decine delle quali in gravi condizioni.
Nella vicina Mati la Guardia Costiera è stata costretta a intervenire per evacuare i turisti intrappolati sulla spiaggia. Un secondo incendio sta devastando le pinete in una zona a 50 chilometri a ovest di Atene. Il fumo denso, arrivato fin sulla capitale, ha costretto alla chiusura della principale autostrada di collegamento con il Peloponneso.
Oltre alle centinaia di unità di Vigili del fuoco, sette aerei anti-incendio e quattro elicotteri cercano di circoscrivere i roghi dall'alto.
